140 Old Farm Rd,
Bernards Twp. NJ

6 beds | 4.1 baths | 5.49 Acres | MLS/ID#: 3423297

Tall trees shade a large courtyard edged with decades old fieldstone wall and lantern posts. Follow the driveway’s descent to the 11-room residence and realize the beginnings of a botanical nirvana. Wonderfully private, the 5+ acre grounds are a mecca of lush horticultural diversity complemented with woodlands. From columned porches and the artistically rendered terrace at the home’s rear, the outlook is to a spring-fed stocked pond with fountain and lighting, a recently restored gunite  pool with spa and the gently rolling lawns to the Har-Tru surfaced tennis court. The present owner reveals he is regularly told this is perhaps the loveliest property in Basking Ridge. He further discloses he chose to purchase it upon seeing only the grounds having not yet entered the home.

A striking open-stud portico proceeds its solid-roofed counterpart at the home’s entry bringing a fresh spirited motif to the home’s traditional design. The contemporary treatment continues in the high front-to-back foyer, its glass walls introducing the structure’s proclivity for inviting the outdoors in. High set grids bestow a decorative charm to large casement windows while allowing unobstructed views of the property’s bountiful amenities. Freshly painted walls, handsome oak floors and newly installed carpeting prevail throughout generously sized rooms. In the living room the stone fireplace rises to the cathedral ceiling. The renovated kitchen hosts amber-hued pine cabinetry, robust appliances and an expansive island. An L-shape wall of continuous windows virtually converts the family room to a sun room. French doors prevail at the several entries to the home and glide into wall pockets at the paneled library with sizable wet bar. And while laundry rooms are rarely applauded, this one—copiously-sized, amply bestowed with cabinetry, counter space and state of the art appliances, needs to be noted.

Four bedrooms occupy the home’s second level including the master suite whose bedroom opens to a balcony and whose bath is a haven of comfort. The fifth bedroom with sitting room is located on the third level while the sixth bedroom, with bath, is over the garage and enjoys a private entrance.

Bernards Township has long been favored by discerning buyers seeking a sophisticated community with small town charm convenient to train lines and major thoroughfares. Equally attractive are abundant recreational opportunities, the area's pastoral beauty and nationally awarded Ridge High School.

Bernards Twp. (Basking Ridge), NJ real estate market

Basking Ridge in Bernards Township has retained its small-town charm for over 200 years. Most of the shops, restaurants, and services along tree-lined South Finley Avenue are located in historic 19th-century houses. In fact, the downtown area has so much history that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Bernards Township was originally formed by Royal Charter as Bernardston Township. The name Bernards Township was given to the area in 1760 by King George II to honor Sir Francis Bernard, Provincial Governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760. It was incorporated as Bernards Township in 1798. Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons, and West Millington are located within Bernards Township, while Martinsville is split between Bernards and Bridgewater Townships.

Even though maps indicate that Basking Ridge is a small commercial district in the northeast section of Bernards, about 95% of the township is referred to as Basking Ridge and has a Basking Ridge postal address. The only major parts of Bernards that do not have Basking Ridge addresses are the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons and Liberty Corner, a small historic district in the southern portion of the township.

The Bernards Township municipal building on Collyer Lane is housed in a circa 1912 brick Tudor mansion detailed with French pocket doors, maple and mahogany paneling, and marble fireplaces. The house and its 28 acres were sold to the township by John Jacob Astor VI for $140,000 in 1968.
